BCREA’s Position on Water Governance

Effective governance of water resources is essential to the health and prosperity of the province. With responsibility for various aspects of water spread across several ministries, decisions, policies and legislation are ineffective and inefficient within the province and when working with the federal government.

BCREA Recommends the Provincial Government:

  • Create one ministry to manage all aspects of water.
  • Enforce standards consistently at the regional level.

Government Action

In spring 2014, the BC Legislative Assembly passed Bill 18: 2014 Water Sustainability Act. The legislation will be implemented in 2016, replacing the Water Act and modernizing BC's approach to water governance. In July 2015, proposed water policies were published for public consultation as the regulations to support the Water Sustainability Act are developed.
