Drug Home Remediation: Why BC Needs New Standards

February 18, 2025

A recent study revealed that drug home remediation standards vary by municipality across British Columbia. In this video, BCREA CEO Trevor Koot discusses the latest research and why many are calling for province-wide standards.

Transcript

What happens when a home in BC is found to have been used in drug production? How is it remediated and declared safe to be lived in by a new owner or renter?

The disconcerting answer is: “It depends.”

Recently, BCREA commissioned a study from the University of the Fraser Valley Centre for Public Safety & Criminal Justice Research, which found varying municipal standards for drug home remediation across the province. That means the policies and procedures will look different depending on where you live.

This is concerning for several reasons.

The health hazards and safety issues associated with drug production in residential homes are complex, particularly when synthetic drugs are involved. This kind of drug production can create a range of environmental and health risks, including the contamination of soil, groundwater, and the air in and around a residence. And these issues are only getting more complex as new drugs are introduced.

So, what’s the answer? The study goes on to lay out a blueprint to standardize processes across BC to ensure accepted levels of repair to help return these properties to the housing market.

BCREA is fully behind this idea and sent an open letter to members of the provincial government imploring that these standards be adopted province-wide. This would not only improve the situation today. It would also ensure that the remediation process can be adapted from a single, centralized place of knowledge over time.

BC needs as many safe, livable homes as possible. And BCREA will continue to advocate for their development and maintenance.
