How BCREA Advocates for a Better Housing Ecosystem

March 18, 2025

Advocacy and Government Relations are core parts of what BCREA does. But what does this work look like and how do you get results? In this video, BCREA CEO Trevor Koot breaks down this important task.

Transcript

If you’ve been watching this video series or reading the BC Real Estate Association’s website, you’ll know that Government Relations work is a core part of what we do. We’re proud to advocate for policy that increases affordability and protects consumers, and this advocacy takes many forms.

In our January video, I spoke about the newly launched BC Home Flipping Tax, its drawbacks, and BCREA’s call for a repeal. Then last month, we talked about our efforts around drug home remediation, commissioning a study and petitioning the government to ask for province-wide standards.

And we’re getting results. Last summer, we joined forces with the Canadian Mortgage Brokers Association – BC to call out issues with changes to BC’s Residential Tenancy Act. In the wake of our open letter, the government changed the legislation in accordance with some of our recommendations.

There’s also our role with the BC Financial Services Authority, our provincial regulator. This involves creating multiple touchpoints and consistently working together to strengthen professionalism in our sector and enhance consumer protection.

But here’s the thing: This work is not about strong-arming the government or our regulator. At the end of the day, it’s a balancing act – providing not just a forceful voice but a rational voice, while maintaining our seat at the table.

An example of that is BCREA’s Government Liaison Days, an annual event that brings together delegates from all eight of BC’s real estate boards and associations to learn about advocacy issues and meet with their local MLAs. The issues discussed are always timely and related to the political and economic environment of the day.

These are always relevant topics at a time when BC housing is front of mind, and where BCREA can play an important role in the larger conversations. A role we intend to keep, through care and consistency.
