How AI is Changing the Real Estate Sector

Artificial intelligence is rapidly altering consumer behaviour and expectations. In this video, BCREA CEO Trevor Koot discusses AI’s growing presence and what it means for REALTORS® and organized real estate.

Technology has always moved — and I believe will always move — faster than organizations and industries can adapt. And artificial intelligence is accelerating that pace even more.

Part of the reason is simple: Existing infrastructure is costly to replace. But the other part is the human factor.

The real estate sector is a perfect example of this push-and-pull. Some REALTORS® are reluctant to adopt AI tools, while others are already including AI in their everyday workflows.

Regardless of where any of us falls on that spectrum, we all need to understand how AI is going to impact our work. That means understanding how consumers are interacting with AI, how it affects marketing and engagement, and how it will influence the REALTOR® value proposition.

Because make no mistake — consumer behaviour is shifting. According to a recent KPMG survey, 73 per cent of Canadian employees use AI tools daily to a few times per week. People are asking AI for information directly, and the responses are becoming more robust.

This trend disrupts search engine optimization, social media engagement, and more, and it should soon start changing consumer expectations of the real estate sector – if it hasn’t already.

As AI learning models become increasingly populated with data, the consumer is getting more information, more quickly, than they ever have. And that will influence what they expect from all of us.

So, what should REALTORS® do? Whether you’re an early adopter or have been taking a wait-and-see approach, I encourage you to look beyond AI as a tool for you – to be aware of the impact AI is having both on the world at large and on the sector. Have conversations with your clients about their experiences. Monitor the effectiveness of your digital marketing strategies. And pay attention to how AI models continue to influence consumer habits.

These shifts are inevitable. But our collective appreciation that change is underway will help us adapt and ensure the REALTOR® value proposition continues to evolve alongside consumer expectations.
