The REALTOR® value proposition has changed and will continue to change. In this video, BCREA CEO Trevor Koot breaks down how REALTORS® can redefine their role in a rapidly evolving digital and regulatory landscape.

There was a time when access to listings played a huge part in the REALTOR® value proposition.

Before the internet, if someone wanted to see which homes were on the market, they had needed sit across from a REALTOR®. The catalogues were protected, and exposure to a listing happened mainly at the showing.

That time is long gone.

Today, clients know more about a property of interest before seeing it than ever before. The information is nearly open, and it’s everywhere.

And the pace of change in the sector isn’t slowing down. Tech solutions will emerge and regulatory changes will continue to alter the landscape.

To be fair, REALTORS® aren’t alone in this. The same story is playing out in all sorts of sectors and industries, where the business environment has completely shifted since the emergence of AI. There’s increased pressure to innovate, compete with emerging companies, and adopt new technologies.

For many of us, this kind of change can be scary. It inevitably brings new challenges, which aren’t always welcome or comfortable.

But I believe resilience and adaptability have long been calling cards for the real estate sector, positioning REALTORS® to rise to the moment and reassert the unique value they offer clients. And I believe both regulation and data can play a part in this next step.

With contracts and legal requirements getting more complex all the time, consumers need trusted, educated allies on their side. In short, REALTORS® need to capture the trust created by being regulated.

As for data, we need to be prepared for a world in which all aspects of the real estate process are digitized – a process that will streamline the consumer experience. It will be important to ensure that the REALTOR®’s role in this new landscape is recognized and rewarded.

We know that the REALTOR® value proposition is changing, and will continue to change. At BCREA, we’re committed to helping articulate and communicate that value, now and into the sector’s bright future.
