What Hasn’t Changed in BCREA’s 50 Years

March 24, 2026

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the BC Real Estate Association, a milestone that reflects its long history of service to the sector. In this video, BCREA CEO Trevor Koot reflects on the Association’s history, the evolution of its work, and the enduring commitments that continue to guide it.

Transcript

The BC Real Estate Association is celebrating a major milestone this year. We were incorporated all the way back on March 31, 1976, which means we’re turning 50.

A lot’s happened in the years BCREA has been around. And yet, where BCREA is concerned, some things haven’t changed at all.

The Association was created to be the voice of BC REALTORS® and real estate boards. It was responsible for the administration of post-licensing real estate education and acting as a government liaison.

Sound familiar?

While BCREA is no longer responsible for licensing-related courses, our commitment to REALTOR® education has been a constant. Today, our Professional Development Program consists of dozens of courses covering topics ranging from radon to Indigenous lands, contracts, and disclosures.

And regular viewers of this video series will know all about BCREA’s role as a government liaison. Advocacy work is at the heart of what we do. Our Government Relations department has big things planned for our 50th year, and shows no signs of slowing down.

The other thing that hasn’t changed during BCREA’s history? Housing markets and dynamics have always presented challenges. And, as boom times have given way to downturns, BCREA and BC REALTORS® have weathered ups and downs together.

Of course, just because a lot’s stayed the same doesn’t mean we haven’t evolved with the times.

To help REALTORS® react to those changing markets, BCREA added an Economics department in 2006. Our Economics reports and forecasts have solidified BCREA as a resource not just to membership, but to the public as well – something that continues to be important to our Board of Directors, who recently made connecting communities and enriching lives our new vision statement.

Change is inevitable, and evolution is important. I think we can agree that some things about BCREA haven’t changed over the decades. But that doesn’t mean that they never will.
